NSCDC arrests four suspected cable vandals in Abuja

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, has paraded four suspected electrical cable vandals arrested in Abaji, Kubwa and the Wuye axis of Abuja.

The FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this while parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

Odumosu said the arrests followed intelligence-led operations targeting the vandalism, illegal possession and trafficking of electrical installations and armoured cables across the territory.

He identified one of the suspects as Mammed Nuhu, 44, who was arrested in Abaji with bundles of high-tension aluminium conductor cables suspected to have been vandalised from Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) installations.

Nuhu allegedly told investigators that two other suspects, identified as Saifullah, 33, and Abdulraham, 25, brought the cables to him for safekeeping pending their sale. The two suspects are reportedly at large.

In Kubwa, NSCDC operatives arrested Amos Makama and Ibrahim Mohammed Maitama Inuwa, both aged 27, over alleged vandalism and possession of electrical cables at Government Secondary School, Kubwa.

Makama allegedly confessed to cutting electrical wires inside the school before attempting to escape with the materials. He reportedly said Inuwa had agreed to buy the stolen items and paid an advance of N35,000. Both suspects allegedly admitted to involvement in the business since 2024.

In a separate incident, Suleiman Jafaru was arrested near Berger Roundabout along the Wuye axis over alleged excavation and theft of armoured cables. Two diggers and armoured cables were recovered, while two alleged accomplices escaped.

Odumosu condemned the acts, warning that cable vandalism threatens residents’ welfare, safety and economic wellbeing while increasing the cost of repairing electricity infrastructure.

He vowed to pursue both vandals and buyers of stolen materials, urging residents, transport operators, traders and scrap-metal dealers to report suspicious activities to the authorities.

He added that investigations were ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects and bring all those involved to justice.
