FG identifies 44 contacts as Nigeria confirms Ebola case in FCT

The Federal Government has identified 44 close contacts for monitoring following the confirmation of an Ebola virus disease (EVD) case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The case was confirmed on October 20, 2026, involving a woman who recently arrived in Nigeria on an international flight from Uganda.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday and signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the patient was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT, where she received medical care for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed.

The statement said the woman was currently in isolation and receiving treatment.

It added that the Federal Government had intensified public health measures to contain the infection and prevent further transmission.

The response is being coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), in collaboration with the FCT Health Services Secretariat and other relevant agencies.

The government said contact-tracing operations had commenced, with response teams working to identify, assess and monitor individuals who might have been exposed to the virus.

Those being considered for monitoring include healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and persons linked to the patient’s travel.

It said surveillance, laboratory testing and other essential response activities were also being conducted in line with established public health protocols.

According to the statement, the measures are aimed at detecting potential cases early, strengthening infection prevention and control, and minimising the risk of further spread.

The government urged Nigerians and other residents to remain calm, avoid speculation and misinformation, and comply with advisories issued by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the NCDC and other relevant health authorities.

It also advised the public to rely exclusively on verified information from official government channels.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it would continue to liaise with relevant national institutions and other stakeholders to support the coordinated response.

It assured the public that further updates would be issued through official channels as verified information became available.

The government expressed appreciation to members of the public and relevant stakeholders for their cooperation as efforts continue to contain the infection and protect public health.
