Nigeria, Cyprus move to deepen economic, educational ties

Nigeria and Cyprus have expressed readiness to strengthen bilateral relations, with emphasis on trade, investment, education and political dialogue, following the presentation of credentials by Nigeria’s Ambassador, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, in Nicosia.

Ufochukwu, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, presented her Letters of Credence to the Cypriot President, Nikos Christodoulides, at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Friday.

The ceremony formally marked the commencement of her diplomatic assignment to the Mediterranean island nation.

During the ceremony, the Nigerian envoy conveyed the goodwill and fraternal greetings of President Bola Tinubu to Christodoulides and pledged her commitment to strengthening relations between both countries.

In his remarks, the Cypriot president welcomed the ambassador and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria, which he attributed to shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections.

Christodoulides acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

He assured the Nigerian government of Cyprus’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to advance mutually beneficial partnerships.

The Cypriot leader identified the economy, trade, investment, education and political dialogue as key areas for enhanced cooperation, adding that both countries could collaborate in addressing common challenges at bilateral and multilateral levels.

The diplomatic engagement is expected to create opportunities for stronger commercial relations, increased investment and expanded educational exchanges between the two countries.

It also provides a platform for addressing issues affecting Nigerians living, studying and working in Cyprus, while encouraging greater interaction between businesses and institutions in both countries.

Ambassador Ufochukwu is expected to engage Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as part of efforts to translate the renewed diplomatic goodwill into tangible benefits.

Senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission attended the credential presentation ceremony.

The development signals a renewed push by both countries to expand cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations and strengthen partnerships in areas of shared economic and strategic interest.
