Executive Chairperson of the Federal Character Commission Hon. Ayo Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran has vowed to partner relevant organisations to reform the commission for improved capacity to deliver on its mandate for an enduring legacy of fairness and balance among Nigerians.
Speaking on Tuesday when the leadership of the Social Development Action Trust (SDA-Trust) paid a courtesy visit to the commission at its Abuja headquarters, Hon Hulayat spoke about existing challenges, including resistance to aspects of the Commission’s mandate, and affirmed her determination to confront those challenges head-on.
The visit marks a significant step towards a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening the Commission’s institutional effectiveness and broadening its public engagement.
“My vision is a Federal Character Commission that serves all Nigerians equitably — regardless of ethnicity, or religion,” she said.
The chairperson expressed appreciation for the visit by SDA-Trust and acknowledged that, among the numerous partnership proposals received by the Commission, SDA Trust’s proposal stood out for its clear alignment with the Commission’s objectives.
“Our collective national interest must always guide leadership and governance, and we welcome partners who share this commitment,” she emphasised.
Earlier, the Interim President of the Social Development Action Trust (SDA-Trust), Hussaini Abdu, PhD congratulated the Executive Chairperson on her appointment and outlined SDA Trust’s commitments to advancing inclusive development, governance, and national cohesion.
He noted that while the Federal Character Commission plays a critical role in promoting national inclusion, the institution has not always received the level of attention and support commensurate with its mandate — a gap that SDA Trust is committed to helping address.
“We are here to explore practical areas of collaboration,” said Abdu. “SDA-Trust is keen to work with the Commission to identify institutional gaps, support ongoing reform efforts, and strengthen the Commission’s capacity and public engagement,” just as the commission prepare to mark its 30th anniversary.
He further commended the Chairperson for the recent launch of the Commission’s website and reaffirmed SDA Trust’s readiness to support it through targeted strategic development initiatives with funding from Ford Foundation.
“In the coming months, we are confident that this collaboration will yield measurable outcomes in advancing the Federal Character Commission’s constitutional mandate and fostering greater national cohesion,” Abdu said.
