Rainstorm damages Abuja bus terminal months after commissioning

The Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja has been damaged by heavy rainfall, raising fresh concerns over infrastructure quality and project accountability in the Federal Capital Territory.

The terminal, which was commissioned in 2025 by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, is part of a ₦51 billion contract for the construction of three modern bus terminals aimed at improving urban transportation and curbing the menace of “one chance” crimes in the city.

Despite its completion and commissioning, the Kugbo terminal had remained unused as of March 2026, pending operational approval by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The facility was designed to handle over 10,000 passengers daily and serve as a major hub to streamline transport activities in Abuja.

However, recent rainfall has reportedly caused visible damage to parts of the structure, sparking criticism from residents and stakeholders who question the durability of the project and the delay in putting it to use.

Observers say the incident highlights broader concerns about infrastructure delivery, maintenance, and the gap between project commissioning and actual utilization.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the extent of the damage or plans for repairs and operational rollout of the terminal.

The development has renewed calls for transparency and accountability in public infrastructure projects across the capital.
