Qwest Ride hosts driver confab, promises lower commissions

The Nigerian based ride hailing platform, Qwest Ride has convened a major driver and stakeholders’ conference, positioning itself as a driver-focused alternative in the country’s fast-evolving mobility sector.

The Qwest Driver Conference, recently held in Katampe Extension, Abuja, brought together union leaders, drivers, and members of the press in what organisers described as an “open-floor engagement” on the realities of the industry. Participants were given the opportunity to speak directly on key concerns ranging from rising fuel costs to insurance coverage and overall driver welfare.

In a sector often criticised for high commission rates, Qwest Ride announced a headline policy of 5% commission for drivers, a move that drew attention from attendees who say earnings have been under pressure amid inflation and operational costs.

“We want to build a system that works for drivers, not against them,” the company CEO, Cherie Michelle Mohammed said during the session, emphasising a model that prioritises sustainability for those behind the wheel.

Beyond driver earnings, the platform also unveiled new incentives aimed at attracting riders, including a “2 free rides” offer for new users, tied to recent app downloads. Officials say the strategy is designed to boost patronage while ensuring drivers benefit from increased trip volume.

Security was another central focus of the conference. Qwest Ride highlighted enhanced safety features for both riders and drivers, though specific technical details were not fully disclosed. Stakeholders at the event, however, welcomed the emphasis on protection, noting growing concerns around ride-hailing safety nationwide.

A notable moment at the event was the unveiling of Ruben Okala as part of the platform’s broader communication and visibility strategist. Okala, a respected media figure with decades of industry experience and current station head at Kaftan TV, was introduced as a key figure expected to strengthen the brand’s public engagement.

Union representatives at the conference acknowledged the platform’s attempt at inclusivity, noting that giving drivers and stakeholders a seat at the table marked a shift from industry norms where decisions are often top-down.

The Qwest Driver Conference reflects a growing trend among Nigerian tech-driven mobility companies to localise solutions and respond more directly to grassroots concerns.
